Ruth Thomas
Elected to the RCA 2005
Born in Nottingham in 1963. Ruth studied a Foundation in art and design at Nene College, Northampton, 1981-2, a degree in Fine Art at Coventry (Lancaster) Polytechnic, 1982-5 and an MA in Art & Design at Leeds Metropolitan University, 1994-6.
Ruth creates collagraphs, prints taken from collages. A collage has the quality of a cast in that it retains a ghost of the original object; like a cast it conveys the absence of the object.
The objects in Ruth's work are naturally occurring, often discarded, lifeless or redundant, such as snake skins, worm casts or seed heads.
The work gives new life, form and colour to the objects, while retaining their innate characteristics and natural beauty.
